It was by pure chance that the beautiful and wild looking Ocicat came to be. This breed of cat happened to come about, as a result of one cat fancier wanting to create a Siamese of a different color. Upon breeding a Siamese with an Abyssinian, the result was a striking and majestic cat that resembled the most graceful and magnificent creatures in the jungle, the Leopards and the Ocelots.

Appearance
Besides the distinctive spotted coat, the Ocicat also features a powerful and graceful body, a very distinctive wedge shaped head that is adorned with a pair of Siamese like ears, a long elegant tapering tail and brilliant eyes that resemble a more Oriental shape and are completely surrounded by a dark color.

Anyone viewing an Ocicat for the first time may comment that this wild looking cat also looks a little scholarly as the dark color around the eyes almost mimics glasses. This breed is considered to be a medium-sized breed and typically weighs anywhere from six to fourteen pounds.

The original Ocicat was born with an ivory coat and golden spots. However, today there are many varieties of colors and patterns recognized by cat associations. These colors and patterns include Tawny, Chocolate, Cinnamon, Blue, Lavender, and Fawn colors. Each of the patterned Ocicats are available in each color previously mentioned. The patterns available for this breed are spotted tabby, spotted silver tabby, and spotted smoke patterns.

Behavior and Characteristics
The Ocicat is well known for being a people loving cat. Anyone whose job requires them to spend long hours away from home, should consider a more self contained breed of cat. The Ocicat is perfect for families with children as they love to play.

In addition, these cats are extremely intelligent and can be taught many tricks such as fetch, and how to come when they are called, but don’t just stick to simple tricks, these cats are more than willing and capable of learning so much more. Loving the company of humans, don’t be surprised at how welcoming your Ocicat will be with friends and other family members who drop by for a visit.

This wonderful, loving breed is also content with having other cats for companionship, which makes this breed a perfect addition to multi-cat homes. Just remember, an Ocicat thrives on human attention and affection, so when they are left alone for long periods of time, they are prone to becoming depressed. An Ocicat will take all the love and devotion a person has to offer.

A happy Ocicat is a playful Ocicat, so it is important that your cat have lots of toys to play with. This doesn’t require much in the way of money as a crumpled piece of paper, a feather or even a piece of string can make for hours and hours of delightful fun.

Grooming
Grooming an Ocicat does not require that much time. A good brushing once a week to remove loose hairs and dander should be sufficient for keeping the coat shiny and healthy. However, as this breed loves attention, don’t be too surprised if grooming becomes a more frequent event

For anyone who has fantasized about owning a majestic and dangerous cat of the jungle, the Ocicats untamed look combined with its loving and playful personality is a perfect alternative to quench that wild cat craving.
